What Happens When I Call 9-1-1?

  • A Communicator will answer your call saying: “9-1-1, do you require police, fire or ambulance?”
  • You will be connected with the emergency service you need
  • If the communicator can’t understand you, or you can’t respond, you will automatically be connected to the police

The OPP communicator will ask you basic questions like:

  • Where is the location of your emergency?
  • What is happening?
  • When did it happen?
  • Who is involved?
  • Are there any weapons?

Take a deep breath. Listen carefully. Try to stay calm. Answer each question.

Callers who do not speak English or French will be connected with the Language Line. The Language Line provides interpreters who speak more than 240 languages. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
