Bear Encounters - Who Do I Call in the Upper Ottawa Valley?
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is working collaboratively with the Ontario Provincial Police to protect public safety and educate communities across Ontario about black bear behaviour.  Black bears that come into a populated area aren't always a threat to public safety.

Non-Emergency Encounters
Call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (TTY 705-945-7641) if a black bear is:
*Roaming around, checking garbage cans;
*Breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored;
*In a tree;
*Pulling down a bird feeder or knocking over a barbecue; or
*Moving through a backyard or field but is not lingering.

Emergency Situations
ONLY CALL 911 if a black bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, such as:
*Entering a school yard when school is in session;
*Stalking people and lingering at the site;
*Entering or trying to enter a residence;
*Wandering into a public gathering; or
*Killing livestock/pets and is lingering at the site.

Attention Petawawa Point Users
With low water levels currently being experienced on the Ottawa River at Petawawa Point, all Petawawa Point Park users are asked to adhere to the following guidelines until further notice:

*  The boat launch is currently very shallow. As a result, launch users may experience difficulties launching their watercraft. It is recommended that boats larger/heavier than 14'-16' aluminum fishing boats launch from alternative nearby Ottawa River launch locations. With the water depths currently being experienced, larger boats may require increased vehicle submersion in order to free the boat from the trailer which causes water pollution and increases the risk of vehicle failure. Alternate nearby boat launches include Jubilee Lodge Marina on Garrison Petawawa, Pine Ridge Resort on River Drive, and Pembroke Marina in downtown Pembroke.

*  The decrease in water depths is also creating a shallower swimming area. Bathers are advised to swim upstream of the large "no swimming beyond this point" sign located at the beach head. Bathers are also advised to refrain from swimming far out into the boating channel or to Blueberry Island in order to prevent the possibility of collision.

*  Kayak/SUP and canoe users are asked to be aware of motorized boats travelling in the boating channel and practice safe boating at all times while on the river. For information on safe boating and boating regulations, please visit the Office of Boating Safety/Transport Canada at

For more information regarding the use of Petawawa Point Park or recreational programs currently offered at the park, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 613-687-5678.

Track & Field Facility Construction

The Town of Petawawa and the Renfrew County District School Board are pleased to announce that they have  entered into a partnership with respect to design and construction of a track and field facility for both school and community use. The new facility will be located at the Petawawa Civic Centre between the area known locally as the “Back-40” and the new Valour School on Leeder Lane. With the new Valour School set to open in January (2015), construction of the new outdoor facility will commence shortly. Initial work will include land-clearing and grading and will last through to mid - October. It is anticipated that earthworks will commence shortly afterwards and last until winter sets in. Work will then re-commence in the spring with the anticipated opening of the new track and field facility to be late summer 2015.

Land-clearing associated with the project will be performed by Garrison Petawawa. During both the land-clearing period and construction, residents are asked to refrain from entering the site. The site will be fenced and demarcated so as to inform individuals near the area as to the limits of the site.

Should you have any questions regarding the project and/or specifically, the construction period for the new facility, please call Mr. Kelly Williams at 613-687-5678 ext. 2104 or e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
